What is mensuration?

The mensuration of a trumpet is the ratio between the length and the diameter of the tube. A standard Bb trumpet is largely cylindrical and only conical the last 30 cm. As a result, the B-flat trumpet has a shorter mensuration than, for example, the flugelhorn, which becomes conical immediately after the leadpipe. The last 30 cm of a fluegelhorn is therefore a much thicker tube. In general, the trumpets with a smaller mensuration are heavier to play. The piccolo trumpet is the other extreme with a very small mensuration and therefore a lot of back-pressure.

Larger mensuration:

  • Fluegelhorn
  • Cornet
